none not entered The insect pests which attack sunflowers in Uruguay and their damage are described and recommendations for their control are made. The ants Acromyrmex heyeri, A. lundii and A. striatus damage newly emerged plants by cutting pieces of leaf and may be controlled by destroying nests using heptachlor, aldrin or chlordane. The noctuids Agrotis ipsilon and Peridroma saucia can be controlled using insecticides such as chlorpyrifos, diazinon, endosulfan and monocrotophos. The noctuid Plusia is attacked by a number of predators including Nabis spp., the pentatomid Podisus spp. and the carabid Calosoma retusum and parasitoids such as the tachinid Patelloa sp., the braconid Apanteles sp. and the encyrtid Copidosoma truncatellum. Insecticides which are registered for the control of Plusia are listed.
