comment:
none The recessive mutation, antennapedia (ap), of the parasitoid wasp, Bracon hebetor, transforms portions of the antenna to leg. The phenotype of the mutant was characterized by classifying each annulus of the antenna according to the ratio of length to width (high in leg; low in antenna), color (yellow in leg; dark brown in antenna), and the number of multiporous plate sensilla (absent in leg; approximately four per annulus in antenna). The transformation was more complete in the proximal and distal regions of the antenna, with the distal portion being transformed into a foot, while the middle region remained antenna-like. The ap antennae also exhibit incomplete segmentation and a deficiency in multiporous plate sensillae that may be related to the observed deficient behavior of female and male wasps. Antennae mosaic for ap and normal tissue indicated that the ap allele was expressed autonomously with a longitudinal cell lineage being evident. Linkage of antennapedia and ebony also was found.
