With reference to the discussion papers of H. Moller (1991) [see New Zealand Journal of Zoology, 18: 227-228] and R.A. Fordham (1991) [ibid., 18: 229], the author discusses the biological control of Vespula germanica and V. vulgaris in New Zealand by release of the ichneumonid Sphecophaga vesparum. It is suggested that wasp control should be intensified (via biocontrol over wide areas, plus intensive measures using a variety of means in localized areas) and that research should be directed to ascertain whether introduced wasps are driving any native species to extinction. none
